As Gary Hustwit explored in his new project The Olympic City, the scene at former Olympic sites is not a pretty one.
Some former Olympic sites are retrofitted and used in ways that belie their grand beginnings; turned into prisons, housing, malls, gyms, churches.
Pack has been touring around the city and its Olympic sites with the help of a local, someone who reached out after backing the book project on Kickstarter.
Others sit unused for decades and become tragic time capsules, examples of misguided planning and broken promises of the benefits that the Games would bring.
The exhibition titled, “The Post Olympic City” at the Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York revisits former Olympic host cities and explores their lives following the transformative games.
So far Pack and Hustwit have visited seven other former host cities: Barcelona, Mexico City, Los Angeles, Lake Placid, Montreal, London and Athens.
An exhibition of the photographs in New York and other cities, plus a digital version of the book and deluxe edition (complete with prints from the project) are also planned.
As per usual, they successfully Kickstarted the home stretch of the journey earlier this summer.
In the meantime, Pack and Hustwit are organizing a gallery show of some of their photographs at the Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York City.
As the latest iteration of the Olympic Games gets underway in London, Pack is in this former Olympic city of Sarajevo to explore these overlapping legacies for a photo book about cities that have hosted the Games.
As part of the exhibition, Storefront will live broadcast the 2012 Olympic Games in the gallery.
